It is the most common sleep disorder, which affects an estimated 20 % of the world's population. The symptoms are:
* Some problems falling asleep
* Or even problems staying asleep (wake up several times each night)
* When you are waking up too early
* Daytime symptoms including sleepiness, anxiety, impaired concentration and also memory and irritability.

Short-term insomnia, involves lasting for a few nights or a few weeks, usually affects people who are temporarily experiencing one or more of the following:

* Stress
* A change in environmental noise levels
* An extreme change in temperature
* A different routine, maybe due to jet lag
* Side effects from some medicines

Chronic insomnia, which lasts for a month or longer, usually results from a combination of factors that sometimes include underlying physical or mental problems. And it can also be due to behavioural factors, for example, too much caffeine or alcohol or a long-term disruption to your routine such as with shift work.

Lately I'm suffering from insomnia. Actually I can't sleep early at night. I must keep myself busy till 1 or 2 a.m (to wake up at about 5.30 am), only then I can sleep. Even if I force myself, like I go to bed early and see if I can sleep just by closing my eyes, it doesn't work. My system got used to this early morning hours to go to sleep. The problem now is that often I can't cope with work during the day, I feel really sleepy, I'm in a bad mood, I get stressed easily and I've got lots of concentration problems. Are the sleeping drugs the only solution??

Nice topic Bergisten, a lot of persons suffer from insomnia in our terrible world. Here are some things that you can do to try to cure it:

The easiest way is to try to go to bed at the same time every night. This helps to condition your body so as to sleep during the 'sleep phase' of your biological clock. Once this happens, your emotional disposition will greatly improve. Cut back on things like coffee, tea and soft drinks which contain caffeine. Most of the colored soft drinks contain enough caffeine to keep you awake. Clear soft drinks such as 7 Up and Sprite contain no caffeine. Also you can avoid eating large, heavy meals before going to bed. You can have a glass of warm milk about 30 minutes before bed time. Milk contains 'L-tryptophan' which boosts the 'serotonin' in your brain. Serotonin can cause you to become sleepy and falling asleep very easily. L-tryptophan is also abundant in turkey which sometimes cause post-drowsiness. Do not use your bedroom as a place to work at all. It automatically conditions your body to become alert and stressed instead of being relaxed. You must avoid alcoholic drinks in the evening. Alcohol may help you fall asleep easily but it leads to erratic sleep which is not restful and may also lead to early morning wakefulness. You may listen to calm, soothing music too that will transform your mind and body into a deeply relaxed state. There are many kinds of cassette tapes and CDs geared to help you relax and sleep. Try some and find the ones that work for you.

Do you want more tips?

Of course not, i'm completely against all kind of drug taking to soothe 'mild mental disorders'. You easily become an addict, furthermore depressed when you are on medications. Avoid pills to the maximum because it ruins our system. Drugs can come into play when you have are very depressive.

Before bedtime, try to take a warm shower as it will relax your body and prepare it for sleep. Research indicates that cold or very hot baths have the tendency to energize and wake you. If you have an old mattress, try to buy a new and comfortable one. Being physically uncomfortable will normally lead to serious wakefulness. Are you a fan of naps? You should avoid these if they interfere with your normal sleeping. If you are still awake after 30 minutes,try to get up and do something until you feel sleepy and then try again. If you stay in bed while you feel awake conditions your body as well as your mind to associate your bed with wakefulness or anxiety. Furthermore, keep your bedroom dark as light coming through our eyelids interferes with our normal sleep cycle by sending signals to our brain that its daylight and time to wake up. If you cannot keep your bedroom dark, you can accomplish the same thing by wearing a mask over your eyes lol. Do not watch TV, read or do any other mentally stimulating activities before going to bed. Anything that stimulates your mind must be avoided before going to bed unless you want to lay there thinking about what you saw or read .
