Recently, i have a friend who stopped her studies because she suffers from dementia. That is what she said. I did not really understand what she meant and what i could tell her. I am so sad that she has to stop her studies because she is sick. She is sick isn't it? I have read some things online but didn't really get what dementia is exactly. Can it be treated?

I once read in a magazine that dementia occurs after death of brain cells or damage in parts of the brain which deal with our thought processes. The most common form of dementia is Alzheimer, did you know this? But of course i don't think your friend suffers from Alzheimer disease ...

Hello Pixie and tornado actually dementia is a decline in mental ability which affects the memory, even thinking, sometimes problem solving, concentration and at times perception. We have various forms of dementia,eg, Alzheimer's disease (as tornado stated), they are degenerative, that is, they get worse over a period of time. Vascular dementia is a one of the type which may be non degenerative, it means the contrary of course, they may not get worse with time. People suffering from dementia can easily become confused, leading to some kinda restless or repetitive behaviour which can be very distressing for his family. These persons may also seem irritable, tearful or even agitated at times. Some problems that they can also develop are depression, disturbed sleep, aggression, inappropriate sexual behaviour and incontinence. What exactly do you want to know Pixie? Can you be precise?

Isn't dementia the sensation you feel when you start hallucinating? Correct me if i'm wrong. I did some psychology modules in medicine and it seems that i saw this somewhere or i may be confused with another thing.

You are right Bergisten, people with dementia sometimes have experience of hallucination. They may sometimes see, hear, smell, taste or feel things which are not real. The most common type of hallucinations in dementia involves sight or hearing.

"Dementia" is usually used to describe the symptoms that occur when the brain is affected by specific diseases and conditions.

Dementia is said to be progressive, in other words, the symptoms gradually get worse. And its progress "speed" depends on the individual and each person will experience it in unique, different ways.

I read that most forms of dementia cannot be cured but that research is continuing with the development of drugs, vaccines and other treatments.

Are there mental illnesses that can be cured completely?

I suppose these are not possible till now, I guess there are always traces of the illness that stay and also the fact that the mind is such a complex thing, I think we can never know exactly what is happening in there mainly in other people's head. But I'm asking myself why then are we trying to find more treatments?

this is so horrible. i never knew that such a disease existed. i knew about alzeimer but not dementia. i thought it happened to old people only. it must be so depressing to have to leave school because of that. unfortunately you cannot do anything about it. it is what her fate has decided.
