Adjustment disorder ais very common. A psychological adjustment disorder is characterized by the development of emotional or behavioral symptoms, eg, depression, anxiety, school behaviour problems, fighting, work problems, academic problems, social conflicts or withdrawal and furthermore physical complaints in response to a specific stressor or various ones around you.

To be more simple, if you are facing significant stress, and because of that you develop psychological symptoms that are greater than what might be expected, given the stress, and this causes impairment in your usual life, then you suffer from an adjustment disorder. Major life functioning includes school adjustment, work adjustment, social adjustment, legal difficulties, family adjustment or even physical health.

Stressors can be mostly anything, eg, the ending of a relationship, a marriage, being fired from your job, a family member developing a serious illness, natural disasters, living in a crime ridden area, becoming a crime victim, expecting a baby, getting married etc. These events can cause some stress in nearly everyone.

There are different types of adjustment disorders according to the symptoms that develop. These include, depressed mood, anxiety, mixed emotional response, conduct disturbance, mixed emotional problems and conduct disturbance.

Some other factors distinguish psychological adjustment disorders from everyday stress and various emotional problems. Eg, if a person loses his job and becomes extremely depressed, then Major Depression would be the diagnosis, not an Adjustment Disorder with depressed mood. Secondly, the symptoms should go away within 6 mths, once the stressor has disappeared. If a person lost his job 2 yrs ago and is still depressed about it, even if he found another comparable job, then there is another problem besides an adjustment disorder.

Do you like things related to psyhology or are you on this site to help people? I'm not really into psychiatric problems, but i have also learned some things about psychiatry. Dunno if i'll be a good one, but one thing i want above all is to help people in need ... There are too many persons who suffer.

People who are affected can't reply to threads that much over the internet. Your problem is curable send me a pm and i'll tell you privately coz you've got another problem, not related at all to mental illnesses, right?

waiting for you

Nice information Splash, but what about Darkroomdude, im worried for him, does he really need help? I hope he can get out of his adjustment disorder!

My problem is that i am worried about my weight, i am losing too much weight, is it because i have had a difficult childhood when i lost my brother or something else, cause sometimes i feel depressed.

How do you feel when you are depressed Dorothy? How much is too much weight for you? What is the 'something else'?

I never said that darkroomdude had the symptoms of adjustment disorder. When darkroomdude will pm me, i will give him personal advice, that's better i guess.

That is a very complex thing. Is it more common in a certain persons? Are people at a certain age more exposed to adjustment disorder? I never heard of this before.
Are there more mental disorders on earth?

i think that stress can be fatal sometimes. i know someone who was so stressed for the exams that she started to develop nervous problems and fortunately that it was discovered on time and it was treated. we should avoid stres as much as possible

Cool, it's true that nervosity can be treated much more easily than other problems. That person is very lucky coz usually 'parents' don't see the need of treating their child. The only thing they have in mind is that their child should pass her exams and they exert some kinda pression on the kids.
